Vinesh Phogat: Sole Arbitrator of CAS To Decide on Silver Medal before End of Olympics
Moneylife Digital Team 09 August 2024
Paris-based Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ad-hoc division, after registering the application filed by Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat challenging her disqualification at the Paris Olympics 2024, has referred the matter to a sole arbitrator, Dr Annabelle Bennett, a former judge of the Federal Court of Australia. "The sole arbitrator's decision is expected to be issued before the end of the Olympic games on 11th August," CAS says in a statement.

It says, "The applicant (Vinesh) initially sought a decision from the CAS ad-hoc division annulling the decision (by united world wrestling-UWW to disqualify her) and ordering another weigh-in before the final match as well as a declaration that she be declared eligible and qualified to participate in the final. However, she did not request urgent interim measures. The CAS ad-hoc division procedure is fast, but it was not possible for a decision on the merits to be issued within an hour, bearing in mind that the UWW would have had to be heard first. The procedure is, however, ongoing, and the applicant has confirmed that she seeks the annulment of the challenged decision and to be awarded a (shared) silver medal."

Vinesh was due to compete in the final of the women's 50kg wrestling event but was disqualified by UWW before the bout after failing to make weight by about 100gm (grams).

She then filed an application challenging the UWW's decision on 7th August.

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) was represented by senior counsels Harish Salve and Vidushpat Singhania.

Vinesh had made the weight on the first day and won three bouts on her way to the final, including her tunning win over the defending champion Yui Susaki of Japan.

UWW competition rules stipulate that a wrestler's results would be annulled if he (or she) does not make the weight on either day of competition.
