US Plane Carrying Illegal Migrants Lands in Amritsar
Moneylife Digital Team 05 February 2025
A US military aircraft C-17 carrying the first batch of 104 illegal Indian immigrants, with the highest number of 33 each from Haryana and Gujarat, landed at Amritsar's Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport amid tight security. The US administration has launched a crackdown on illegal immigrants after Donald Trump became the president.

According to reports, a total of 30 deportees are residents of Punjab. Three each are from Uttar Pradesh (UP) and Maharashtra, while two are from Chandigarh. The deportees include 25 women and 12 minors, with the youngest passenger being just four years old.

They were deported on the C-17 plane that took off from San Antonio in Texas on Tuesday.

Last month, Union minister for external affairs S Jaishankar told US secretary of state Marco Rubio that India is ready to accept these migrants, after verification.

According to data from the Pew Research Centre, about 725,000 illegal immigrants from India live in the US, making it the third-largest population of unauthorised immigrants after Mexico and El Salvador.

Trump's crackdown is stupid and vindictive on these illegal migrants.

However, one should not forget that unlike those from Central America who are poor and fleeing violent gangs, these migrants are from the affluent strata of Indian society. Often they pay thousands of INR to middlemen to get into the US.

I know of some from Modi's state who overstay their visas and continue to live with their affluent progeny. Some even have the nerve to declare themselves indigent and apply for Public Aid.

Truly, nothing like these people from Modi's state who are so wily that even the US is unable to catch and deport them.
