Brian Thompson, the chief executive officer (CEO) of UnitedHealthcare, the world's largest healthcare company by revenue, was shot and killed in a brazen and targeted attack outside a Manhattan hotel where the health insurer was holding its investor conference, police says setting off a massive dragnet hours before the annual Rockefeller Center Christmas tree lighting nearby.

Mr Thompson was shot around 6.45am as he walked alone to the New York Hilton Midtown from a nearby hotel. The shooter appeared to be 'lying in wait for several minutes' before approaching Mr Thompson from behind and opening fire, New York City police commissioner Jessica Tisch said.

"Many people passed the suspect, but he appeared to wait for his intended target," the police commissioner says adding that the shooting "does not appear to be a random act of violence."

Paulette Thompson, the wife of Mr Thompson told NBC News that he had told her that there were some people that had been threatening him.

She said that she did not know the details but it could have been motivated by a lack of coverage in the company's insurance programmes.

Mr Thompson led UnitedHealthcare, the largest US health insurance company with an annual revenue of US$281bn (billion) and more than 140,000 employees, many stationed in India for backoffice, technology and strategy jobs.
