Trump Proposes US$5mn Gold Card To Replace EB-5 Visa
Moneylife Digital Team 27 February 2025
US president Donald Trump has unveiled a plan to replace the current EB-5 immigrant investor visa program with a new 'gold card'. This system would allow foreign investors to obtain US citizenship by investing US$5mn (million).

The new proposal aims to address issues of fraud and inefficiency that have plagued the EB-5 program which grants green cards to foreign investors, creating US jobs. "We are going to be selling a gold card. You have a green card, this is a gold card," Mr Trump says.

He further says that the proposed US$5mn gold card visa would help the country pay down its debt while offering top companies a way to attract top immigrant workers. Mr Trump said the government would start selling the visa in about two weeks.

Mr Trump's proposal was backed by US secretary of commerce Howard Lutnick, who criticized the EB-5 program for being 'full of nonsense' and a 'low-priced' way to obtain a green card. The new gold card initiative would require rigorous vetting, ensuring investors meet high standards as 'world-class global citizens'.
