Trump Imposes 25% Tariff on India from 1st August, Citing High Trade Barriers and Russian Ties

US president Donald Trump has announced a sweeping new trade measure imposing a 25% tariff on Indian imports starting 1 August 2025, escalating tensions between the two countries over long-standing trade issues. In a post on his social media platform, TruthSocial, the president accused India of maintaining excessively high tariffs and 'obnoxious' non-monetary trade barriers, while also criticising the country’s continued reliance on Russian military and energy imports.

“Remember, while India is our friend, we have, over the years, done relatively little business with them because their Tariffs are far too high, among the highest in the World,” Trump wrote. He further alleged that India enforces “the most strenuous and obnoxious non-monetary Trade Barriers of any Country.”

Citing national security and geopolitical concerns, the president added, “They have always bought a vast majority of their military equipment from Russia, and are Russia’s largest buyer of ENERGY, along with China, at a time when everyone wants Russia to STOP THE KILLING IN UKRAINE — ALL THINGS NOT GOOD!”

Concluding the post in his signature tone, Trump declared: “INDIA WILL THEREFORE BE PAYING A TARIFF OF 25%, PLUS A PENALTY FOR THE ABOVE, STARTING ON AUGUST FIRST. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER. MAGA!”

The move marks a sharp escalation from the baseline 10% import duty president Trump announced in April this year which was primarily aimed at countries like China and members of the European Union. At the time, the administration justified the tariff hikes as necessary measures to correct persistent trade imbalances and protect American manufacturing interests.

The new 25% tariff against India appears to be both punitive and symbolic, targeting what the Trump administration describes as unfair trade practices and India’s reluctance to align more closely with the West on global strategic issues, particularly in the context of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

India has not yet officially responded to the latest tariff announcement. However, trade experts warn that the measure could complicate bilateral economic relations, especially given India’s growing technology and defence trade with the US in recent years. Indian exports to the US, ranging from pharmaceuticals and textiles to IT services and auto-components, could face significant headwinds if the tariff is implemented in its announced form.

President Trump’s remarks on India's military and energy relationship with Russia echo concerns raised by US policy-makers since the onset of the Ukraine war. While India has maintained a neutral stance, calling for diplomacy and dialogue, its continued purchase of Russian oil and arms has drawn criticism from several quarters in the West.

The announcement is likely to trigger sharp reactions from global markets and could force India to reassess its trade and diplomatic strategy with the US as both countries head into politically charged election years.

More clarity is expected in the coming days as trade and commerce ministries from both sides weigh in on the potential fallout and next steps.

China has used rare earths as negotiating tool almost like a weapon. India too can easily use generic drugs as a weapon. India may announce an immediate ban on export of generic drugs to US. Americans will soon realize the folly of Trumps Tariff wars. Moreover, India can immediately issue an ordinance and start charging 18% GST on ALL payments through American companies (google, Amazon, others). Since the parliament is in session the law too can be passed ASAP.
The most indebted country is now ready for a fatal catastrophe. The dollar is losing its value as transactional currency in trades among many countries. It is only a matter of time before nations start dumping dollar as reserve by the central banks and seek gold and silver instead.
Trump is a liar and will go to dump. This megalomaniac seems to be doing drugs. Morning he says something and evening something else. Must be hallucinating. Poor guy is in need of a shrink.
