US president Donald Trump, in his first speech to a joint session of Congress on Wednesday, criticised India's import duties, describing them as ‘unfair’ and a contributor to global trade imbalances. President Trump announced that ‘reciprocal tariffs’ would be introduced from 2nd April 2025, signalling a tougher stance on international trade.

Mr Trump took aim at countries such as India, China, Brazil and the European Union (EU) for imposing ‘tremendously higher tariffs’ on US goods compared to the tariffs levied by the country.

He specifically singled out India, stating, "India charges us auto tariffs higher than 100%," highlighting his concerns over what he sees as unjust trade practices.

The president further clarified that under his administration, "you will pay a tariff and, in some cases, a rather large one."

Reinforcing his position, he added, "Whatever they tariff us, we will tariff them back," stressing the principle of reciprocity in trade negotiations with countries, including India.

President Trump also criticised non-monetary barriers that prevent US companies from accessing foreign markets, including India. He vowed that the US would retaliate by imposing similar barriers on imports from countries that restrict American market access, thereby creating more jobs and economic opportunities in the US.

This direct reference to India, among other nations, highlights the growing trade tensions between the US and global powers. President Trump's rhetoric signals a more aggressive stance on trade, reaffirming his commitment to safeguarding US economic interests through reciprocal tariff policies.
