Senior Advocate Iqbal Chagla Passes Away
Bar  and  Bench 13 January 2025
Senior Advocate Iqbal Chagla passed away on Sunday.

A leading advocate at the Bombay High Court, Chagla was the son of legendary Indian jurist and former Bombay High Court Chief Justice MC Chagla.

Chagla also served as the president of the Bombay Bar Association thrice.

He started his practice with the famous Kharshedji Hormasji Bhabha.

Chagla was conferred Senior Advocate designation in 1979, at the relatively young age of 39.

He was offered judgeship thrice - twice by the Bombay High Court and once by the Supreme Court.

He would have become the Chief Justice of India had he accepted the offer but he declined each time.

He explained the reasons in an interview to Bar & Bench.

“There were many reasons. I was told that I would become the Chief Justice of India in the course of time. It was said in such a way to make sure that I could not say no. But I would have been the Chief Justice for only 13 months, which I felt was not enough. There were other personal reasons. But they could have been overridden if the period would have been longer as the Chief Justice."
