Qantas Airline Suffers Cyberattack, Data of 6mn Customers Compromised
Moneylife Digital Team 02 July 2025
In what is being described as one of the most significant cybersecurity breaches in Australia in recent years, Qantas Airline has reported a cyberattack that exposed the personal information of around 6mn (million) customers.

The breach originated from a third-party system and led to the unauthorised access of sensitive customer data, including names, email addresses, phone numbers and dates of birth. Qantas, however, clarified that no credit card or passport information was compromised in the incident.

In an official statement, the airline confirmed that its flight operations remained unaffected. The matter has been reported to Australia’s national cyber security coordinator for further investigation and response.

The breach follows a recent advisory from the US federal bureau of investigation (FBI) which had warned that the cybercriminal group ‘scattered spider’ has been actively targeting airlines. Hawaiian Airlines and Canada’s WestJet have both reported similar data security incidents in recent months.

Although Qantas has not attributed the attack to any specific group, the incident has raised serious concerns among cybersecurity experts and stakeholders in the aviation sector.

Investor sentiment was also impacted, with Qantas shares falling by 3.3% in mid-session trading, in contrast to a largely flat broader market.

The carrier says it is working with cyber forensic experts to assess the full extent of the breach and has urged affected customers to remain vigilant against potential phishing attempts or fraud.

Most likely attack from US hackers. We know the double speak game of US. Show friendly face and then stab in the back.
