No More Kingfisher, Heineken Beer in Telangana as UB Suspends Supply over Price Revision
Moneylife Digital Team 08 January 2025
United Breweries Ltd (UB), the maker of popular Kingfisher and Heineken beer, has decided to suspend the supply of beer in Telangana due to non-revision of prices since FY19-20.

In a regulatory filing, UB, a unit of Heineken NV, the world's second-largest beer maker, says, "...the company has decided to suspend the supply of its beer to Telangana Beverages Corporation Ltd (TGBCL) with immediate effect."

"This decision of the company has arisen because TGBCL has not revised the basic price of the company's beer since 2019- 20, resulting in huge losses in the state and significant overdues remaining unpaid by TGBCL for the past supply of beer by the company. As a result, the continued supply of our beer to TGBCL has been rendered unviable," it added.

According to a survey by the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP), Telangana leads the southern states in beer sales, with a staggering 30.28mn (million) beers sold between April and October 2024.

A report from The New Indian Express says tipplers from Telangana consumed liquor worth Rs3,523.21 crore in December 2024 alone. The report says 3.55mn cases of Indian-made liquor (IML) and 4.25mn cases of beer were sold in December 2024. Comparatively, beer sales in December 2023 were 4.62mn cases, compared to 3.95 cases in December 2022.
