Moneylife Digital Team 08 August 2024
Some more heartbreak for crores of Indians and the wrestling community as Vinesh Phogat, who was disqualified from the women's 50kg event at the Paris Olympics after being a 'few grams over' the permissible limits, decided to quit wrestling.

Seeking forgiveness from everyone who supported her, the 29-year wrestler announced her decision on X, saying she does not have the strength to continue anymore. The post is addressed to her mother, Premlata. Vinesh says "Wrestling has won, I have lost. Please forgive me, your dreams and my courage, everything is broken...I don't have any more strength now. Goodbye Wrestling 2001-2024..."

In a heartfelt message on X, Olympian Abhinav Bindra told Vinesh that she is a fighter—on and off the mat. "Through you, we are learning what it means to never lose the fight in us, even as a loss weighs heavily. You embody the true spirit of a warrior."

On Wednesday, Vinesh was disqualified for being 100gm overweight ahead of her 50kg category gold medal bout in the Olympics.

In a message on X, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) says, "It is with regret that the Indian contingent shares news of the disqualification of Vinesh Phogat from the Women's Wrestling 50kg class. Despite the best efforts by the team through the night, she weighed in a few grams over 50kg this morning. No further comments will be made by the contingent at this time. The Indian team requests you respect Vinesh's privacy. It would like to focus on the competitions on hand."

Just on Tuesday, Vinesh became the first Indian woman wrestler to reach the final of an Olympic Games after defeating Cuba's Yusneylys Guzman 5-0 in the semifinal.

Before that, she stunned world No. 1, Japan's four-time World Champion and Tokyo Olympics gold medallist Yui Susaki, who was undefeated in 95 international matches in her entire career as a wrestler.

Vinesh then defeated Ukraine's Oksana Vasylivna Livach 7-5 in her second bout of the day.

A former World No.1 in 48kg, Vinesh was participating in her third Olympics.

This is the third Olympics for Vinesh. In 2016 Rio Olympics, she narrowly missed a bronze medal due to an injury. In Tokyo, she lost to Vanesa Kaladzinskaya in the 53kg quarterfinal.

Earlier, Vinesh participated in 48kg and 53kg categories. This year, however, she is participating in 52kg category for the first time.
