Maharashtra Approves State Data Policy To Enhance Accuracy and Ease Data Collection
Moneylife Digital Team 26 February 2025
In a significant step towards digital governance, the Maharashtra government has approved the state data policy, paving the way for establishing a dedicated state data authority. This newly-formed body will function as an integral part of the Maharashtra Institution for Transformation (MITRA) and will be led by a chief data officer.

The office of Maharashtra chief minister (CM) Devendra Fadnavis shared the announcement on X, highlighting the far-reaching impact of this policy. With its implementation, statistical data across all government departments is expected to become more accurate and consistent, facilitating better decision-making and policy formulation.

One of the key objectives of the policy is to reduce the manual workload of frontline workers, including Anganwadi sevaks and krushi sahayaks, who operate in rural areas. These workers often spend a considerable amount of time collecting data manually, a process that is both time-consuming and prone to errors. By adopting digital platforms, including the direct benefit transfer (DBT) system and Aadhaar-linked databases from other government schemes, data collection will become seamless and more efficient, the CM's office (CMO) says.

This shift is expected to allow frontline workers to focus more on their primary duties, such as delivering essential services to the public, rather than being burdened with extensive paperwork.

The initiative will be financially supported through the World Bank-assisted MahaStride project, further strengthening Maharashtra's push towards digital transformation and governance reform, the CMO added.

With the state data policy in place, Maharashtra aims to create a robust data governance framework that enhances transparency, efficiency and service delivery across the state.
