Madhur Bajaj, Former Bajaj Auto Vice-chairman, Passes Away at 73

Madhur Bajaj, former vice-chairman of Bajaj Auto and a prominent figure in India's industrial landscape, passed away on Friday morning at Mumbai's Breach Candy Hospital following a brief illness. He was 73 years old.
 
According to company sources, Mr Bajaj had been hospitalised due to health issues and suffered a stroke two days before his death. He breathed his last around 5am on Friday, with funeral rites performed later that afternoon at the Worli crematorium in Mumbai.
 
Born on 19 August, 1952, Madhur Bajaj was a third-generation member of the industrialist family founded by Jamnalal Bajaj. He received his education at the prestigious Doon School in Dehradun, followed by a BCom degree from Mumbai's Sydenham College in 1973 and an MBA from the International Institute of Management Development in Lausanne, Switzerland, in 1979.
 
Mr Bajaj had recently stepped down from his position as vice-chairman of Bajaj Auto in January 2024 due to health concerns. In addition to his role at Bajaj Auto, he served as a director for several companies within the Bajaj group, including Bajaj Finserv Limited and Bajaj Electricals Limited, and was chairman of Maharashtra Scooters Limited.
 
His contributions to India's automobile industry were significant, having served as president of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) from 2005 to 2007. SIAM president Shailesh Chandra highlighted Bajaj's instrumental role in developing the first automotive Mission Plan for 2006-16, which strengthened India's automotive sector. Mr Bajaj also held leadership positions in other industrial bodies, including serving as president of the Mahratta Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture (MCCIA).
 
 
Union commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal expressed his condolences, noting that Mr Bajaj "will be remembered for his exemplary leadership, which not only propelled the Bajaj Group to greater heights but also contributed to the India story."
 
Sanjay Kirloskar, president of MCCIA, praised Bajaj's visionary leadership during his tenure as the organisation's president from 2006 to 2008, highlighting initiatives such as signing an MoU (memoradum of understanding) with UNIDO to help MSMEs (micro, small and medium enterprises) meet global standards and promoting entrepreneurship and innovation.
 
The India's International Movement to Unite Nations also mourned Mr Bajaj's passing, remembering him as "a man whose humility, wisdom, and quiet leadership left an indelible mark on all who knew him."
 
Madhur Bajaj was a recipient of the 'Vikas Rattan' Award from the International Friendship Society of India for his outstanding achievements and contributions to enriching human life. He is survived by his wife Kumud and two daughters, Neelima and Nimisha.
