Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai on Wednesday took oath as the 52nd chief justice of India. President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath to him at a special ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Justice Gavai succeeds chief justice Sanjiv Khanna who retired on Tuesday.

Justice Gavai makes history as the first Buddhist to hold the office of chief justice in India. His appointment marks a significant milestone for the country’s judiciary. The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including vice president Jagdeep Dhankhar and prime minister Narendra Modi.

Born on 24 November 1960 at Amravati in Maharashtra, justice Gavai embarked on his legal career in 1985, specialising in constitutional and administrative law. He became a permanent judge of the Bombay High Court in 2005, before being elevated to the Supreme Court in May 2019.

In his career, justice Gavai has been a part of over 700 benches, handling a diverse range of cases, including constitutional matters, civil and criminal law, and environmental issues. He has authored around 300 judgements many of which have reinforced the rule of law and safeguarded citizens' rights.

Justice Gavai will serve as chief justice for just over six months and is set to retire on 23 November 2025 when he reaches the age of 65.
