Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the US and the longest-lived US president, has passed away at the age of 100. The Nobel peace prize laureate has been in hospice care since mid-February 2023.

Mr Carter, who served as president from 1977 to 1981, rose from humble beginnings in rural Georgia to lead the nation. His post-presidential years were marked by efforts in disease eradication, democracy promotion, and conflict resolution.

Known for his integrity and commitment to public service, Mr Carter was a US Navy veteran and a Southern Democrat. Despite facing personal and health challenges, including a 2015 brain cancer diagnosis, he lived a long and active life, becoming a symbol of dedication to humanitarian work.

In tribute to the former president, the US flag at the White House was lowered to half-mast following the announcement of his passing. The American flag on Capitol Hill was also lowered to half-staff in honour of his legacy.
