ITR Filing Deadline Extended to 16th September after Tech Glitches Hit I-T Portal

The Union government has extended the deadline for filing income-tax returns (ITRs) for assessment year (AY)25–26 by one day, to 16 September 2025, after technical glitches disrupted access to the e-filing portal on the original due date.

In a late-night post on the social media platform X, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) announced that the due date, which had already been extended once from 31st July to 15th September, would now be pushed further by a day.

“To facilitate further filings of ITRs, the due date has been extended by one day (16th September 2025),” CBDT said. The board also confirmed that the e-filing portal would undergo maintenance between 12:00am and 2:30am on 16 September 2025 to enable required changes.

Several taxpayers who faced the issues while filing their tax returns took to social media to vent their frurstration, with one person saying on the last day, the I-T portal fails to take the load which has become a annual feature.

The CBDT move to extend the deadline by one day came on a day when the department reported record filings, with more than 73mn (million)  ITRs submitted by 15 September 2025, surpassing last year’s 72.8mn. In a statement, the income-tax (I-T) department expressed gratitude to taxpayers and professionals for helping achieve the milestone, while urging those who had not yet filed to do so immediately.

“More than 7 crore ITRs have been filed so far and still counting. We extend our gratitude to taxpayers and tax professionals for helping us reach this milestone, and urge all those who haven't filed ITR for AY 2025-26, to file their ITR,” the department says.

To address the heavy traffic and user concerns, the department assured taxpayers of round-the-clock support through calls, live chats, WebEx sessions and social media.

The announcement followed a series of clarifications issued by the department over the weekend. On Sunday, it had dismissed rumours of another extension till 30 September 2025, terming such reports 'fake news' and advising taxpayers to rely only on official updates.

The initial due date for filing non-audit ITRs had been extended in May from 31st July to 15 September 2025. With the latest one-day extension, taxpayers now have until midnight on 16 September 2025 to complete their filings.

According to officials, the sharp surge in filings reflects increasing tax compliance and a growing taxpayer base, even as the system faced pressure from the unprecedented traffic on the final day.
