On 11th March this year, the Indian government notified Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2024. The Rules envisage manner of the application form, the procedure for processing applications by a district-level committee (DLC) and the scrutiny and grant of citizenship by a state-level empowered committee (EC).

After these rules were notified, the government received applications from persons belonging to Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, Parsi and Christian communities from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan who had entered India till 31 December 2014 due to persecution on the grounds of religion or fear of such persecution.

In successful verification of documents, the DLCs chaired by senior superintendents of post or superintendents of post as designated officers administered the oath of allegiance to the applicants. After processing as per rules, DLCs forwarded the applications to EC headed by the director for census operation. MHA says that application processing is completely done through the online portal.
