Income Tax Return Filing Deadline Extended to 15th September from 31st July
Moneylife Digital Team 27 May 2025
The central board of direct taxes (CBDT) has extended the due date for filing income-tax returns (ITRs) for assessment year (AY)25–26. The original deadline of 31 July 2025 has now been pushed to 15 September 2025, the board says in a release.

It says, "This extension will provide more time due to significant revisions in ITR forms, system development needs, and tax deducted at source (TDS) credit reflections. This ensures a smoother and more accurate filing experience for everyone."

The extension comes in response to substantial changes introduced in the notified ITR forms for the current assessment year, aimed at simplifying compliance, improving transparency, and ensuring more accurate reporting. These revisions have required additional time for system development, integration, and testing of the corresponding online utilities, CBDT added.

The board noted that credits from TDS statements, which are due for filing by 31 May 2025, are expected to begin reflecting only in early June. This limited the effective filing window for taxpayers, particularly those relying on timely reflection of TDS for accurate return submission.

“In view of the extensive changes introduced in the notified ITRs and considering the time required for system readiness and rollout of ITR utilities… the CBDT has decided to extend the due date,” the board says.

The earlier agency which was handling was doing a great job with no issues and it was changed to the present oneandle and from that day till date there are lot of issues which our finance ministry dept are trying to play it down saying there is no issue whereas all the people who are using it know how much struggle one has to do to file it.India is know for software and give back end support to lot of companies worldwide but such a simple issue is notable to handle it.It does notgive good feeling .GOI is giving thousands of crores of tax payers money for doing an inefficient job by a global company. It does not speak good about the software companies in India.

No clarity regarding due date of payment of tax payable whether it is 31st July or 15th September.Technical glitches galore. In my case in the year 2014 TDS deducted and paid by my employer was not uploaded into IT database.Even after submission of clarification by my employer and my rectification application,IT DEPT continues to show pending demand till date

This 2014 issue arose probably while IT Database was centralised at Bangalore. The TDS Data was not properly uploaded and that is why additional tax was demanded even after receiving full tax payment. Is it not harassment to honest taxpayers.Filing tax return is becoming a complex process year after year
