India has taken a major leap in modernising its postal and address infrastructure with the launch of two innovative web platforms by the department of posts (DoP) under the Union ministry of communications: ‘Know Your DIGIPIN’ and ‘Know Your PIN Code’. These applications are designed to enhance geospatial governance, improve last-mile delivery, and make every address in India digitally identifiable and service-ready.
Here is a step-by-step guide on how you can use these tools to your advantage.
Step 1: Understanding DIGIPIN and PIN Code Platforms
DIGIPIN (digital postal index number) is a geo-coded, grid-based digital address system developed in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad and ISRO’s NRSC. It is precise, open-source and designed to support services across government and private sectors.
Know Your PIN Code refines the classic six-digit postal PIN code system using geofencing and location mapping, making PIN code identification far more accurate.
Step 2: Access the Portals
Both portals are hosted on India Post’s digital platform.
You can access them on any desktop or mobile browser with an active internet connection.
Step 3: How to Use ‘Know Your DIGIPIN’
• Option 1: Use Your Location
Allow the site to access your device’s GPS. It will automatically generate your DIGIPIN based on your precise geolocation.
• Option 2: Input Coordinates
If you know the latitude and longitude, you can manually enter them to get the corresponding DIGIPIN.
• Option 3: Reverse Lookup
Enter a DIGIPIN to retrieve its exact geographical coordinates.
This tool is especially useful for rural residents, delivery agents, emergency responders, developers, and government agencies aiming to provide services more accurately.
Step 4: How to Use ‘Know Your PIN Code’
• Use GNSS Location
The portal uses your device's global navigation satellite system (GNSS) to determine your exact location and fetch the correct PIN Code.
• Verify Accuracy and Submit Feedback
If you notice discrepancies, use the feedback option on the portal to report inaccurate pin code boundaries. Your input helps improve the system through citizen participation.
Step 5: Why You Should Use These Tools
• For Individuals: Get accurate address details for postal deliveries, emergency services, e-commerce, and navigation—even in remote areas.
• For Businesses: Improve logistics, warehouse coordination, and customer service by integrating precise address systems.
• For Developers: Access the open-source DIGIPIN dataset on GitHub and innovate further.
• For Government and Institutions: Streamline public service delivery and update records with precise geospatial data.
Step 6: Contribute to Continuous Improvement
Both portals are designed for ongoing development, the Ministry says. "You are encouraged to submit feedback on usability and accuracy. This ensures that the platforms remain responsive to user needs and evolve with real-world data from across India."
The launch of these platforms aligns with the National Geospatial Policy 2022 and reinforces India’s digital public infrastructure (DPI) goals. As Vandita Kaul, secretary of DoP remarked, this initiative ensures “every citizen, even in the remotest part of the country, is digitally locatable and serviceable.”
With these tools now live, citizens and organisations alike are better equipped for the future of digital addressing, logistics, and governance. Try them today and be a part of India’s digital transformation.
