FASTag Mandatory for Toll Collection in Maharashtra from 1st April: Govt
Moneylife Digital Team 08 January 2025
The Maharashtra Cabinet has decided to make toll collection through FASTag mandatory from 1 April 2025. The Cabinet also announced revisions in the rules of business to streamline administrative processes for toll collection through FASTag.

A proposal submitted by the public works department (PWD) for collecting tolls across the state through FASTag only was approved by the state Cabinet chaired by chief minister (CM) Devendra Fadnavis.

According to the Cabinet decision, vehicles without a FASTag or those entering designated FASTag lanes without proper tagging will be required to pay double the toll fee.

Currently, the PWD manages 13 road projects, while the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) handles toll collection at nine projects across the state.

As per the government statement, the new rules will apply to existing toll projects and all future toll collection projects across Maharashtra.

The Cabinet also approved amendments to the public-private partnership (PPP) policy 2014 to facilitate this change.

From 1 January 2021, the Union ministry of road transport and highways had made FASTag mandatory for all four-wheeler vehicles across the country.

Since 1 December  2017, the FASTag has been made mandatory for all registration of new four wheeled vehicles and is being supplied by the manufacturers or dealers.

It has been further mandated that a valid FASTag is mandatory while getting a new third-party Insurance. This provision shall be applicable from 1 April 2021.
