FASTag Annual Pass of Rs3,000 for Private Vehicles from 15th August: Gadkari
Moneylife Digital Team 18 June 2025
In a major move aimed at making highway travel more seamless and economical for private vehicle owners, Union minister for road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday announced the launch of a FASTag-based annual pass priced at Rs3,000, effective 15 August 2025.

Describing the initiative as a 'transformative step towards hassle-free highway travel', in a post on X, Mr Gadkari says the new annual pass is intended exclusively for non-commercial private vehicles such as cars, jeeps, and vans. The pass will be valid for one year from the date of activation or up to 200 trips, whichever comes first.

Once activated, the FASTag annual pass will allow private vehicle owners to travel through national highway (NH) toll plazas without repeated deductions or the need for multiple top-ups—simplifying toll payments through a single, upfront transaction.

“This policy addresses long-standing concerns regarding toll plazas located within a 60-km range and aims to cut down on wait times, reduce congestion, and minimise disputes at toll booths,” Mr Gadkari said. He added that this move will deliver a smoother, faster travel experience for millions of Indian motorists.

A dedicated link for activation and renewal of the annual pass will be made available soon on the Rajmarg Yatra App, as well as the official websites of the national highways authority of India (NHAI) and the ministry of road transport and highways (MoRTH), the minister added.

The FASTag annual pass announcement comes against the backdrop of India’s rapid highway infrastructure development. Over the last ten years, the country’s national highway network has grown by 60%, expanding from 91,287km in 2014 to 1,46,204km in 2024.

According to recent government data, the average speed of highway construction has nearly tripled, from 11.6km per day in 2014 to 34km a day today. In total, 1,01,900km of highways have been built over the last decade, marking a 130% jump compared to the previous 10 years (2004–2014).

Furthermore, 1,366 highway projects covering approximately 32,366km are currently under construction nationwide, with completion timelines extending to FY27-28. These projects span across states including Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and several northeastern states.

The Union government’s investment in road infrastructure has skyrocketed, with the road transport and highways budget witnessing a 570% surge between 2014 and 2024. Investment has increased 6.4 times compared to 2014, enabling record-breaking growth in the sector.

The new FASTag annual pass is expected to be a game-changer for private commuters, offering predictable, budget-friendly travel across India’s expanding highway network. It also aligns with the government's push for digital tolling, cashless payments and improved logistics efficiency on national roads.

With traffic volume rising and long-distance travel becoming increasingly common, this fixed-cost model will likely appeal to regular highway users, especially those commuting between cities or travelling frequently for personal reasons.

According to ministry officials, the rollout mechanism, usage guidelines, and terms of renewal will be released shortly, ahead of the launch on 15 August 2025.
