CNG Price Hiked by ₹2/kg in Delhi, Fourth Increase in Less Than Two Weeks
Moneylife Digital Team 26 May 2026
Indraprastha Gas Ltd (IGL) on Tuesday increased the price of compressed natural gas (CNG) in the national capital by ₹2/kg, marking the fourth hike in less than two weeks, amid rising input costs and volatility in global energy markets.

Following the latest revision, CNG in Delhi will now cost ₹83.09 per kg, up from ₹81.09 per kg.

The latest increase comes after the ₹1/kg hike announced on Saturday and takes the cumulative increase in CNG prices since 15 May 2026 to ₹6/kg across four revisions.

IGL, the largest city gas distributor in northern India, has also revised CNG prices across the National Capital Region (NCR) and other cities. Consumers in Noida, Ghaziabad and Greater Noida will now pay ₹91.70/kg, while rates in Gurugram have risen to ₹88.12/kg. In Ajmer, CNG will now cost ₹92.44 per kg.

The first revision in the current cycle came on 15th May, when prices were increased by ₹2/kg. This was followed by hikes of ₹1/kg on 17th May and 23 May 2026 before Tuesday’s increase.

The repeated hikes are expected to affect users of CNG-powered vehicles, particularly in metropolitan cities such as Delhi and Mumbai, where public transport buses, taxis and commercial vehicles depend heavily on the fuel.

Transport operators have expressed concerns that rising operating costs could eventually lead to higher passenger fares and increased logistics expenses.

The latest increase in CNG prices comes at a time when petrol and diesel prices have also been revised upwards repeatedly by state-owned oil marketing companies.

Petrol and diesel prices have now been increased four times in less than two weeks, with the latest revisions attributed to fluctuations in international crude oil prices, currency movements and concerns over crude supply linked to continuing tensions in West Asia.

In Delhi, petrol prices have risen by ₹2.61/litre and are now retailing at ₹102.12/litre, while diesel prices have increased by ₹2.71 to ₹95.20/litre.

Mumbai has also recorded sharp increases in fuel prices. Petrol in the financial capital now costs ₹111.21/litre after a rise of ₹2.72, while diesel prices increased by ₹2.81 to ₹97.83/litre.

In Kolkata, petrol prices climbed by ₹2.87/litre to ₹113.51, while diesel rates rose by ₹2.80 to ₹99.82/litre. Chennai witnessed petrol prices rising by ₹2.46 to ₹107.77/litre and diesel prices increasing by ₹2.57 to ₹99.55/litre.

Oil companies had earlier raised petrol and diesel prices by ₹3/litre each on 15 May. Another increase of 90 paise/litre followed on 19 May. On 25 May, petrol prices were raised again by 87 paise/litre and diesel prices by 91 paise/litre. paise in itals in both places.

Meanwhile, Mumbai-based Mahanagar Gas Ltd (MGL) has reportedly discontinued support schemes and subsidies for commercial customers, citing the ongoing geopolitical situation and its impact on costs.

Analysts said continued increases in fuel prices could push up transportation and logistics costs, potentially affecting prices of essential commodities transported by road.

The Union government had reduced excise duty on petrol and diesel on 27 March 2026 in an attempt to provide relief to consumers, but the recent surge in global energy prices has offset much of the benefit.
