Bangladesh president Mohammed Shahabuddin dissolved the Jatiya Sangsad (parliament) to make way for the formation of an interim administration. Separately, the Indian government granted an interim stay for Bangladesh's former prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, following the collapse of her government in the South Asian country on Monday.

In a statement, the president's office says, "The decision to dissolve the parliament was taken following the president's discussions with chiefs of three staff of armed forces, leaders of different political parties, representatives of civil society and leaders of the Anti-discrimination student movement."

Former PM Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the country on Monday following massive protests against her government.

However, there has been no confirmation from the UK government regarding the grant of political asylum for the former PM of Bangladesh, according to a report from Daily Sun

Meanwhile, after a meeting at the Bangabhaban in Dhaka to discuss the formation of an interim government with the chiefs of the three armed forces, leaders of various political parties, and civil society representatives, a statement issued by President Shahabuddin's team says, " (the meeting) decided unanimously to free Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia immediately."

The meeting decided to form an interim government, urging everyone to exercise patience and tolerance in controlling the law and order situation in the country. It also decided to take strict action to stop looting and violent activities.
