Assam Flood Situation Still Critical, 6.3 Lakh Affected, 12 Deaths

The flood situation in Assam remains dire, with over 633,000 people affected across 21 districts following the state's first major flood of the season. The death toll has climbed to 12, with six more deaths reported in the past 24 hours, according to the Assam state disaster management authority (ASDMA).

Widespread devastation has been reported in 1,506 villages spanning 69 revenue circles, with the deluge submerging around 14,739 hectares of cropland. Continuous rainfall and overflowing rivers have disrupted transportation and displaced thousands.

Sribhumi district remains the worst-hit for the second consecutive day, with more than 230,000 people affected. The disruption to road, rail, and ferry services has hampered mobility and emergency efforts in several regions.

Eight rivers, including the Brahmaputra, Burhidihing, Kopili, Barak, Dhaleswari, Rukni, Kushiyara, and Katakhal, are flowing above the danger level. Notably, the Katakhal River has crossed its highest recorded flood level, prompting authorities to issue red alerts in several low-lying and vulnerable areas.

To address the crisis, the state government has set up 511 relief camps and distribution centres across the affected districts. These shelters are providing food, drinking water, medical aid, and essential supplies to displaced residents. Relief and rescue operations are being carried out by teams from the state and district disaster response forces (SDRF and DDRF), inland water transport, fire and emergency services and local administration units.

On Tuesday, Assam chief minister (CM) Himanta Biswa Sarma visited flood-hit areas to take stock of the situation and interact with affected residents. Sharing updates via the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Mr Sarma said, "At a Relief Camp in Silchar, I came across an injured woman. I have asked the administration to promptly take her to the Medical College and ensure she gets proper treatment. In times of such distress, the Govt of Assam will take full care of our people."

In another post, the CM assured continued government support, stating, "Wherever you are, our Govt will reach you and ensure your problems are taken care of. That is the spirit and promise of a new Assam."

While relief efforts are ongoing, the authorities are urging residents in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant and adhere to safety advisories. Weather officials have warned of more rain in the coming days which could worsen the situation in already affected areas.

As Assam braces for further rainfall, the focus remains on providing immediate aid and preventing further loss of life amid one of the state's most severe early-season floods in recent years.
