Akshaya Tritiya Spurs Gold, Silver Buying
Moneylife Digital Team 01 May 2025
The festival of Akshaya Tritiya, guided by celestial alignments, is considered an auspicious time to purchase gold, silver, or any precious metal. This year, jeweller showrooms are seeing increased footfall, but due to high gold prices, people are being cautious about investing too much this festive season.

Buying trends during this Akshaya Tritiya have also shown an increased preference for 16-carat and 18-carat gold, with many also investing in precious gemstones. Particularly, younger buyers are opting for lightweight jewellery and unique designs. Despite the high prices, the enthusiasm for the festival remains strong, with customers purchasing gold in smaller quantities and preferring gold and silver coins.

According to Rajesh Rokde, chairman of All India Gem and Jewellery Domestic Council (GJC) the recent price fluctuations—peaking at Rs99,500 as on 22 April 2025 and now down to Rs95,000—have only reinforced buyers confidence in gold as a strong investment. “Today, we observe two types of customers: those purchasing in the Rs50,000 to Rs5 lakh range, drawn to the festive rush, and high-value buyers investing Rs10–Rs15 lakh, who plan and book their selections days in advance to buy during the muhurat. With the drop in gold prices, the number of customers has notably increased, contributing to an impressive total sales figure of Rs20,000 crore on Wednesday. Furthermore, as the wedding season kicks off during Akshaya Tritiya, demand is expected to rise significantly in the coming days."

Mr Rokde emphasised that there is an increasing demand for lightweight jewellery. "There is a noticeable shift towards lightweight designs, particularly among younger buyers and those looking for everyday wear. These pieces offer the elegance of gold while remaining accessible in terms of pricing, making them an appealing choice amidst fluctuating rates."

The word ‘Akshaya’ in Sanskrit signifies eternal, meaning boundless fortune and prosperity. This is why the day is considered an auspicious time to begin new ventures. People buy precious metals like gold and silver thinking it will bring prosperity and good luck to the family.
