Ab Ki Baar... Trump Sarkar!

In an extraordinary comeback for a former president who refused to accept defeat four years ago, sparked a violent insurrection at the US Capitol Hill, was convicted of felony charges and survived two assassination attempts, Donald Trump has been elected the 47th president of the US. The Associated Press (AP) has confirmed that Trump surpassed the critical 270-electoral vote threshold needed to secure the presidency by winning key swing states, including North Carolina, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Georgia. This extraordinary victory propels the 78-year-old former president back to the White House, making him the oldest person ever elected.

Mr Trump's path to victory was solidified when he clinched Wisconsin, pushing him over the required electoral college votes. By early afternoon IST, he had amassed over 279 electoral votes. His campaign focused heavily on the top concerns of American voters, particularly immigration and the economy, areas where Mr Trump was seen as having a strong advantage. Despite a divisive past term, voters overlooked his controversial history, including a felony conviction and ongoing criminal indictments, to once again trust his leadership.

President-elect Trump addressed jubilant supporters in Florida shortly after Pennsylvania was declared in his favour, promising to 'heal the country' and usher in what he called a 'golden age' for America. In a memorable moment, Mr Trump extended his appreciation to high-profile supporters, including Elon Musk, CEO of X (formerly Twitter), calling him a 'new star' of the Republican Party. Mr Trump's running mate, JD Vance, lauded the win as 'the greatest political comeback ever'.

The election represents a striking turnaround for Mr Trump, who left office in 2021 under the shadow of the 6th January US Capitol Hill attack, which followed his refusal to concede the 2020 election. After that turbulent exit, Mr Trump faced severe criticism from Democrats and even some Republicans. However, he spent the following years rebuilding his image and political standing, bolstered by a team of seasoned strategists who helped sharpen his message and regain public trust.

Mr Trump's rival, Kamala Harris, has yet to concede or address her supporters, many of whom left her Washington, DC, watch party early. CNN projections initially showed that Mr Trump needed only four more electoral votes to secure victory, while several states continued to count votes.

Reflecting on his win, Mr Trump told supporters, "We have a country that needs help, and it needs help very badly. We are going to fix our borders, and we are going to fix everything about our country."

Calling his return "the most incredible political thing," Mr Trump embraced the moment as a testament to his resilience and followers' loyalty.

In the coming weeks, Mr Trump's campaign team will work to finalise the transition back into the White House. As he prepares for his second term, his victory signals a new chapter for the US and a potential shift in domestic and international policies.

Meanwhile, Indian prime minister (PM) Naredra Modi congratulated Mr Trump on his victory in the US presidential elections. The PM asserted that he is looking forward to renewing collaboration with the 78-year-old leader further to strengthen the India-US comprehensive global and strategic partnership.

American voters were stupid compared to their Indian counterparts despite their superiority in education and wealth.
Unfortunately this election result will have repercussions around the world unlike the Indian election which affected only Indians in India, not even the Indian diaspora was affected.

While you have a right to your opinion, your conclusion that ~74 million Americans who backed Trump are stupid and by corollary, ~70 million Harris supporters are smart smacks of an ivory tower thought process completely removed from ground reality. Time to smell the coffee, however pungent it may be, and grudgingly accept the mandate that Trump has managed to secure. Everything every time doesn’t go the way one would have wanted it to. The world is large enough to adjust to the new circumstances.

Agree. I should not belittle the opposition.
But Mr Trump not only belittled the opposition in 2020 but has consistently refused to accept his defeat by the Opposition Democrats in 2020, even now.
Ms Harris had the honesty and grace to give a concession speech, attributes Trump lacks even now.
