A year after announcing the withdrawal of Rs2,000 currency notes, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) says the total value of Rs2,000 banknotes in circulation has declined to Rs7,755 crore at the close of business on 19 May 2024.

In a statement, RBI says that out of Rs3.56 lakh crore worth of currency notes in circulation in May 2023, 97.82% have returned to the system.

Stating that the banknote continues to remain legal tender, the banking regulator says the window for deposit and/or exchange of Rs2,000 banknote continues to remain available at the 19 issue offices of RBI.

"From 9 October 2023, RBI issue offices are also accepting Rs2,000 banknotes from individuals and entities for deposit into their bank accounts. Further, people are sending Rs2,000 banknotes through India Post from any post office within the country to any of the RBI issue offices for credit to their bank accounts," the central bank says.
